PROGRAM

ACADEMIC STRENGTH

  • Highlights of our teaching curriculum include many regular and unique opportunities. Simulation curriculum currently includes a Laerdel Sim-Man and will soon include a Sim-Baby. These technologically advanced mannequins serve as hands-on guides to unique and infrequent ED presentations and help with skill acquisition to create practice confidence and code leadership.
  • Teaching workshops are held every 18 months with the nationally recognized physician speaker, Benjamin Blatt, MD, from George Washington University. These all day workshops focus on important aspects of academic emergency including bedside teaching, giving feedback to adult learners, and teaching medical students.
  • Our ED serves a number of ambulance services as a telemetry station that provides on-call medical direction to paramedics with medical questions in the field. Third year residents are trained to properly manage these situations and answer the telemetry phone.
  • Ultrasound resident curriculum, fellowship, and experienced faculty. The department has three Sonosite bedside ultrasounds allowing residents to regularly perform bedside exams to diagnose gallbladder disease, abdominal trauma, aneurysm, deep vein thrombosis, bladder size in pediatrics, central line placement, foreign body location, gyn exams, cardiac wall motion during arrest, and I&D guidance. Our program uses a credentialing schedule whereby upon completing 200 exams in various areas residents are credentialed by the institution to make official diagnostic decisions based on their exam. All exams are saved on a flash card and compiled by Dr. Melniker, the Director of Ultrasound, and are then presented to residents in CD format prior to graduation for professional credentialing and logging purposes.
  • Every 18 months the entire Peds EM fellowship curriculum is covered during Wednesday conference.
  • Mock Inservice examinations are created by faculty and given to residents each year 2 months before the National Inservice exam. We are consistently above the national average with regards to our Inservice exam scores.
  • Oral Board Reviews are held at the end of each year simulating the actual EM oral boards. Rooms are set up with examiners and cases in the exact format of the oral boards.
  • Travel, boarding, and registration fees are paid by the department for any resident presenting research at conferences.
  • On a monthly basis our department travels to citywide conferences to hear notable speakers and network with our peers.
  • A mentoring program has been a tradition of our program creating an atmosphere of informal, friendly, professional guidance as residents matriculate through their three years. Faculty members are very involved in resident education and welfare issues and strong relationships are formed. As a part of this system faculty members work with residents in and out of the department aiding in research, performing direct observation and chart reviews, and offering experienced counsel and feedback.
  • 100% board pass rate last year.
