OVERVIEW
The New York Methodist Emergency Medicine Residency is a categorical 1-3 program with a proud history of producing respected, confident, physicians that have academic and clinical skills to lead future departments. Ours is among the strongest EM programs in the region.
New York Methodist Hospital is a 650 bed community-based teaching affiliate of New York Presbyterian Hospital Care Network and Cornell's Weill School of Medicine. Its Emergency Department evaluates over 65,000 patients annually with thorough variety and high acuity, and as an institution, espouses a positive culture of camaraderie created by doctors who have similar views of institutional mission and lifestyle opportunity. Methodist is large enough to be represented by every subspecialty, yet small enough to have a sense of pride and community identity.
Strong academic ethic is a pillar of the Methodist program. A number of faculty are heavily devoted to careers in research and research in our Department is fostered by example. Our program seriously prepares its graduates for whatever avenue of Emergency Medicine they wish to choose and offers opportunities to pursue all aspects of academic practice. From third world travelers, to community hospital physicians, to ACEP Research Fellows-our graduates span the spectrum.
The Emergency Department is one of the strongest departments in the hospital. In 2006, a new state-of-the- art emergency department was opened. Department chairs and residency directors hold leadership roles within the hospital and have strong and open communication with every level of administration. This combination makes our position in the hospital respected and never are our toes stepped on by any subspecialty.
Methodist's location in New York City is possibly our greatest strength, however. The greater New York Emergency Medicine community is extensive and cohesive and the benefits of our proximity within a cultural center of the world are as profound as they are obvious. Within our profession the opportunities afforded by the larger community are significant and not quantifiable in traditional residency speak. Imagine treating patients from every culture on earth. Imagine learning practical medical-legal advice from partners of Wall Street law firms. Imagine conferences on bio-terrorism given by national leaders in the heart of the city that has experienced so much. And extra-professionally, imagine how any hobby or interest could be nurtured to its fullest. The energy of this city enriches the education our residency offers and residents who don't get to experience this truly will never know what they are missing.
